Looking for an easy Charlotte’s Web costume for Book Week? Fern Arable is a brilliant choice because you can create most of the outfit using everyday clothes, then add a few simple details to make the character instantly recognisable. For our version, we added a spider-web T-shirt, checked shirt, toy pig and a little spider headband to bring the whole Charlotte’s Web theme together.
Book Week costumes don’t always need to be elaborate. In fact, some of the best ones start with clothes your child will happily wear all day.
For this Charlotte’s Web costume, we took inspiration from Fern Arable and kept the outfit simple with jeans, a black T-shirt and pink checked shirt. Then we added the important parts of the story – Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider.
The result was a comfortable DIY Book Week costume that was easy to put together but still clearly connected to the book.

What You Need for a Fern Charlotte’s Web Costume
To recreate our Fern costume, you’ll need:
- Plain black T-shirt
- White heat-transfer vinyl
- Cricut machine
- Heat press or iron
- Pink or red checked shirt
- Jeans or denim shorts
- Toy pig for Wilbur
- Lightweight fake spider
- Plain headband
- Hot glue gun or strong craft glue
- Copy of Charlotte’s Web
Create the Charlotte’s Web T-Shirt with a Cricut
The spider-web T-shirt is what transforms an ordinary outfit into something much more obviously connected to Charlotte’s Web.
We started with a simple black T-shirt and added a large white spider web across the front.
If you’re using a Cricut, search Cricut Design Space for a simple spider-web image or upload your own SVG.
Then:
- Measure the front of the T-shirt to decide how large you want the web.
- Resize the spider-web design in Cricut Design Space.
- Mirror the design before cutting.
- Cut it from white heat-transfer vinyl.
- Weed away all the excess vinyl carefully, particularly between the fine web lines.
- Position the web in the centre of the black T-shirt.
- Press according to the instructions for your HTV.
A simple white-on-black design works really well because you don’t need to layer different vinyl colours.
TIP: Spider webs have lots of fine lines, so take your time when weeding. A slightly thicker web design will generally be easier to work with than an extremely detailed one.
Add a Checked Shirt
Over the spider-web T-shirt, we added a pink checked shirt.
Rather than buttoning it up, leave it open so the spider web remains visible.
We tied the shirt loosely at the waist, which gives the costume a casual farm-style look and helps make it feel more like Fern rather than an ordinary everyday outfit.
You could use:
- Pink plaid shirt
- Red checked shirt
- Blue checked shirt
- Denim shirt
- Any casual button-up shirt you already own
There is no need for an exact match.
Keep the Rest of the Fern Costume Simple
We paired the shirts with jeans, which kept the costume comfortable enough to wear around school all day.
You could also use:
- Denim shorts
- Denim skirt
- Overalls
- Dark jeans
- Casual pants
Finish it with sneakers, boots or whatever comfortable shoes your child already owns.
This is one of those Book Week costumes where the accessories do most of the storytelling, so there is no need to make every clothing item perfectly accurate.
Add Wilbur the Pig
Wilbur is probably the easiest way to make a Fern costume instantly recognisable.
We used a pink toy pig that could be carried around with the costume.
This Little Live Pets pig is a fun option, but any pink toy pig will work.
Before buying one, definitely check the toy box. You may already have a pig from a farm set, soft toy collection or another play set.
If you don’t have a toy pig, you could make Wilbur from:
- Pink cardboard
- A paper plate
- A printed pig picture
- A small pink balloon
- A DIY felt pig
But if you already own a toy pig, this is probably the easiest Book Week prop of all.
Make a Charlotte Spider Headband
To make sure Charlotte wasn’t forgotten, add a little spider to the costume too.
We used a lightweight fake spider attached to a plain headband.
To make your own:
- Choose a plain black or neutral headband.
- Choose one lightweight plastic spider.
- Position the spider slightly to one side rather than directly in the middle.
- Secure it using hot glue or strong craft glue.
- Allow it to dry completely before wearing.
Make sure the spider is lightweight and doesn’t have sharp plastic edges that could make the headband uncomfortable.
If you don’t want to make a headband, you could simply attach a spider to the checked shirt instead.
Carry a Copy of Charlotte’s Web
For Book Week, one of the easiest ways to remove any doubt about a costume is simply to carry the book.
A copy of Charlotte’s Web works particularly well here because the costume references several different parts of the story.
You’ve got:
- Fern
- Wilbur
- Charlotte
- The spider web
- The farm-style clothing
Put them all together and you’ve got an easy costume that celebrates far more of the book than simply dressing like one character.
No Cricut? You Can Still Make the Spider-Web Shirt
You don’t need a Cricut to make this costume.
If you don’t have one, try:
- White fabric paint and a spider-web stencil
- White fabric marker
- Iron-on transfer paper
- White felt cut into a simple web
- A ready-made spider-web T-shirt
You could even skip the web T-shirt completely and rely on the pig, checked shirt and spider headband.
That’s what makes this such an easy last-minute Book Week idea – you can add as many or as few DIY elements as you have time for.

And because Charlotte’s Web is such a well-known children’s book, it works beautifully for Book Week without needing an elaborate costume.
