Looking for a fun, low-stress birthday cake idea that actually looks impressive? This pigs in mud cake is a total winner, no matter your party theme. It’s simple, forgiving (hello rustic chocolate “mud”), and perfect for farmyard, Peppa Pig or animal-themed parties.
Plus, you don’t need fancy decorating skills – just chocolate, a ribbon, and some adorable little pigs.
What You’ll Need
- 1 round chocolate cake (homemade or store-bought mud cake)
- Chocolate buttercream or ganache (for the “mud”)
- 6–8 chocolate bars (e.g. KitKat or similar for the fence)
- Ribbon (to tie around the cake)
- Pink fondant (for pigs) or pre-made toppers
- Cake board
Step 1: Make Your Little Pigss
Using pink fondant, create simple pig shapes:
- Roll balls for bodies
- Add small snouts, ears and tiny legs
- Don’t aim for perfection – the charm is in the wonky, playful look
- Let them firm up slightly before placing on the cake
Tip: Add a few pigs lying on their backs or half-submerged for extra personality!
This is where your creativity comes into it. Have fun creating your pigs and adding a bit of personality to them. If you’re making the cake for a child, be sure to get them involved as well. My 10-year-old daughter hd the great idea to sit the baby pig on top of the ‘Daddy’ pig and it turned out so adorable!
Step 2: Bake The Cake
Now is the time to get baking!
We wanted a deep chocolate mud cake, so went with a packet mix option. We used two packet mixes and poured the batter into one cake tin and baked.
Step 3: Ice Your Cake
Be sure to leave enough time for the cake to cool before popping the icing on.
Cover your cake with chocolate buttercream or ganache and be sure to spread it thickly over the top.
Use the back of a spoon to create swirls and texture. This is your “mud” – so messy and uneven looks perfect.
Step 4: Add The Chocolate Fence
- Break chocolate bars into strips.
- Press them gently around the sides of the cake
- Tie a ribbon around the outside to hold everything in place.
This instantly makes the cake look polished (and hides any icing imperfections!)
Step 5: Add Your Pigs!
Now is the fun part, where you have complete creative license.
Place your fondant pigs on top:
- Sit some upright
Pop some “diving” into the mud - Use the little arms and legs to make it look like the pig is floating in the mud.
The more playful, the better!
You’ll end up with a cake that looks like a muddy pig pen – and kids absolutely love it. It’s:
✔️ Beginner-friendly
✔️ Budget-friendly
✔️ Perfect for farm, animal or Peppa Pig parties
✔️ Easy to customise
