Birthdays are meant to be lots of fun and full of special treats! But, who says treats can only come in the form of cake? For some of our younger people (turning one and two), cake might be something they don’t even know about yet! If you’re not quite ready to introduce it to them, a fruit birthday cake is the perfect solution. Plus, it’s something everyone will love!
Rebecca pulled together this amazing fruit birthday cake. Here are some tips to help you out.
Cutting the bases
Rebecca has used watermelon, then rockmelon then honeydew melon on top.
This is a great way to work, given the size of the fruits! It gives you that perfect three-tier birthday cake look, without too much work from you.
When getting these pieces, it’s best to lay the fruit on it’s side facing you lengthways and find the middle. You now want to cut either side of the middle, to get a nice big slice that can be used as each layer.
Once you’ve made the cut, you can then lay the circle piece flat and cut off the skin around the edges – keeping the circle shape as much as possible in the process.
Decorating the cake
Now comes the fun part – decorating!
You can choose to do this however you like. Grab some cookie cutters to play around with shapes. Rebecca has used some star and love heart cookie cutters to create these decorations.
You can then stick the fruit to each layer of the cake using skewers.
Voila! With a lot of imagination and a little patience, you can really have some fun with a fruit birthday cake.
