This year’s party theme request (see more boys party ideas here) by Bec’s now 2-year-old was ‘bin bin trucks’ so to make his day extra special she collected some decorations and then cake hacked this garbage truck cake (who has the time/can be bothered making cakes these days!). Here’s a how to from mum Bec so you can make your very own DIY Dump Truck Cake.

What you’ll need…
- 3 x Woolworths or Coles mudcakes
- Homemade buttercream (I coloured this one green)
- A mixture of lollies (I collected these over a few weeks… ie. ate 3/4 of the packet and kept a few in a freezer bag so there was a good mix – think mixed lollies, chocolates, tiny teddies, whatever you like really!)
- Garbage truck figurine (this one was $5 from Kmart, also doubles up as a present – win win!)
- Mini wheelie bin. These are filled with mixed lollies, twizzle type sticks & sour coke bottles. Shop them here.
- Cake board of choice – this one is just an old wooden grazing board from Kmart.
- Candles (because you can’t have a cake without a candle.)
To assemble:
- Place icing on the bottom of your board and stack the three cakes with icing in between.
- Apply a crumb coat and let harden in the fridge.
- Apply top coat (as you can see from my lack of baking skills it doesn’t have to be perfect!).
- While this icing is still ‘wet’ add your garbage truck and wheelie bins to the side of the cake (keep some extra icing).
- Allow to set in the fridge (about an hour or so).
- Use the remaining Icing and line the back/door of the garbage truck and start sticking on your lollies/choccies (there was no method to this so go nuts!).
- Use some more icing down the side of the cake and continue sticking the lollies to the cake until your heart is content (it’s ‘rubbish’ remember so it doesn’t have to look pretty).
- Fill the little wheelie bins with lollies.
- Pop in the candle.
Voila…You’ll have one impressed child (or adult if they’re into garbage trucks too ha!). It would be the perfect addition to a construction party!
I made this the night before and kept it in the fridge and it was fine for the next day! Even transported fine in the car to the park for the party…ENJOY
