Race car cake hack

Are you looking for a qucik and easy cake idea to pull together for a mini car-lover in your life? This race car cake hack is just what your after. As an added bonus, you can even put their favourite race cars on top! This cake hack was so easy my 7-year-old and 5-year-old daughters took over. Here’s how you can replicate!

What you need…

  • Cole mud cake (that’s right, no cooking required!)
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • Green food dye
  • One packet M&Ms
  • One packet Oreos
One packet lolly sticks (any kind!)
  • Black fondant
  • White fondant
  • Toy race cars
  • Ready-made icing (just from Coles).

Get started!

To begin this race car cake hack, you need to get your cake board ready.

Pop your Coles mud cake on top and cover it with the ready-made icing.

Roll out your black fondant. Cut into a strip (big enough for the toy race cars to fit on top). I created a slight curve in mine so it didn’t just go straight across.

Place fondant on top of cake and cut to length.

Roll out your white fondant. Cut into thin strips as the centre line for the road. As you can see,  our cars didn’t fit on one side of the centre line so are just going down the middle. If you want to be a little more particualr, create a wider black road.

Pop the Oreos around the outside, sticking them to the icing to stay in place.

Border the road with your chosen stick lollies. We used Haribo Bollo Sticks.

Add one cup of shredded coconut into a bowl and mix with a few drops of green food colouring. Sprinkle around the race track on top of the cake.

Finish with M&Ms scattered around the cake!

We topped our cake with a homemade cake topper done using our Cricut machine.
