With so many colours and shades of balloons available, you have all the colours of the rainbow at your disposal to create a feature decoration at your next event. The concept is simple: stick a variety of different balloons onto a piece of tape, and create a garland of balloons that can be shaped into place to be the perfect feature at your next party. You can choose the size and colours of your balloon garland, and create a piece stunning piece tailored to your event.
Read on for everything you need to know when it comes to pulling together your own balloon garland DIY.
What are Balloon Garland Kits?
While you can create your own balloon garland from scratch (or hire someone else to do it, depending on what you prefer), there are also plenty of kits out there to make the process as easy as possible.
You can shop balloon garland kits to fit your theme. They come pre-packaged with everything you need to recreate the balloon garland yourself and you don’t have to even think about it. A balloon garland kit is the perfect opportunity to hand over the design work to someone else, while you reap all the benefits of the amazing feature you can create from the packet.
Types Of Garlands
Stacked Garland
This type of garland is where all the balloons are stacked on top of each other to create a neat, pole shape. Balloons are arranged in quads (four together) or neat clusters that are all uniform and then stack on top of each other to form the garland.
Linked Garland
These garlands are created by linking balloons. It’s something you often see if you hire out your balloon garland creation to a professional. They are usually single balloons that have been linked by smaller balloon clusters. Here’s a great example in this Winnie the Pooh 1st birthday!
Organic Garland
This is the most common type of DIY garland, for the simple reason it’s the easiest to pull off. You can use balloons of various sizes and colours to create your very own look that doesn’t have to be cohesive. It’s a true form of expression!
How To Use Your Kit
Balloon garlands can be used in so many different ways at that next event.
Balloon Columns
These are often used as a pathway leading up to an event, where people can walk between the two stack garlands on their way in. They stand on their own, and create a magical effect at the entrance of the party. They can be created in a number of ways, using a stacked balloon column, linked balloon column, or you can also create your own free-form column.
Balloon Garland Arch
The balloon arch is one of the most impressive types of garlands out there. They are perfect as a focal point of any party, and often are used for photographs. Once again, they can be created using linked balloons, stacked balloons, or simple, single balloons connected together. You can also create your own organic arch for a statement.
Balloon L-Shaped Garland
This has to be one of the most popular choices at parties. The garland is created and then bent into shape to frame the party table. It also adds the perfect statement to any event. Most of these garlands are created organically to really add that wow factor to the party.
How To Make A DIY Balloon Garland
Before you go ahead and make your balloon garland, you need to have everything handy and ready to go:
- Balloons: go with the theme of your party and start collecting packets of balloons. If you want to create a cool effect, then it helps to get them in all different colours and sizes. You need HEAPS of balloons to make this nice and effective.
- Balloon decorating stick: this is the key to any balloon garland (and comes in most of the kits you can buy). The strip will make creating a DIY balloon garland as easy as it can possibly be. You can purchase the strip here.
- Electric balloon inflator: while you might have grand hopes of being able to blow up all the balloons on your own, I’m here to tell you not to even attempt it. It will take you days to get them all ready and waste so much of your time. This Balloon Buddy is all you need to take away that hard work and make things a breeze.
- Command hooks: finally, you need to be able to pop your balloon garland on the wall. Preferably without causing further damage! These Command hooks are the way to go and they are nice and easy to use and take down at the end of the event.
- Glue dots: these can be used at the end to add in extra balloons to fill in the gaps. Get them here.
How To Guide
Now you have everything you need, it’s time to get creating!
- Blow up balloons. Remember that handy machine I mentioned above, now’s the time to pull it out.
- Attach to decorating strip: Push the end of each balloon through the holes on the strip. Don’t stress about the pattern, just go for gold and it will look amazing.
- Keep adding those balloons the whole way along until you have the length you need. It helps to leave out a few of the smaller balloons to use to fill the gaps at the end. Just in case!
- Pop the command hooks on the wall, ready to go in the shape you want the balloon garland to take.
- Attach your balloon garland to the wall. You can put the holes of the balloon garland strip, through the command hook to secure them in place.
- Finally, you can use your glue dots to go and add in a few extra smaller balloons to fill in any of those gaps.
Things To Think About…
Ready to get creating? Here’s a few things to think about before you dive right in.
Size Of The Balloons
Remember, it helps to have some big and some small balloons to add a little contrasting effect to your balloon garland. Think about this when you’re purchasing your balloons.
Length Of Garland
Don’t cut the garland at the beginning. Buy one long length of garland, attach the balloons and then cut at the end. This saves you creating something too short that doesn’t fill your space. The last thing you want to do is have to go back and start again!
How Many Balloons
Don’t underestimate the amount of balloons you will need to fill up the garland. Let’s be honest, you can never have too many. The leftovers can be thrown on the floor to add to the party space. Go for a range of colours to really bring the theme to life.
